Buchanan on Moral Standards
Mr. Buchanan is correct in stating that we Americans are locked in a cultural war for the soul of our country. But Mr. Buchanan has lost the entire point of why this country was founded in the first place.
America was not founded upon assimilating all cultures and making all Americans the same. We came to this country to escape persecution and prosecution for our religious and political ideas and practices. This country was built upon the celebration of diversity, not upon the idea that we should all think, dress, worship, have sex or vote in the same way.
Furthermore, Hollywood is not at fault in this cultural war. The television, movie and music industries are reflecting what is happening culturally in this country--it is not causing the diversity. Mr. Buchanan blames the L.A. riots on rap music, but what he doesn’t see is that the rap music and the riots are representative of a people oppressed, without jobs or a future.
If we don’t fix the problems of the inner cities, if we don’t take care of our valuable resources, if we don’t celebrate our diversity, we will wake up too late in a fascist society, all worshiping the same way, all dressing the same way, looking the same and voting the same. Hold on to your differentness!
