LOS ANGELES : King Lets Deadline Pass for Settlement of Lawsuit
A deadline passed Friday for Rodney G. King to accept a $1.75-million offer from the city of Los Angeles to settle his police brutality lawsuit, increasing the likelihood of a trial.
King, the black motorist who was beaten by white police officers in March, 1991, sought nearly $5.9 million.
Two weeks ago, King’s attorney, Steven A. Lerman, blasted the city’s offer of a $250,000 lump sum and $75,000 a year to King and vowed to take the case to trial. Friday was the legal deadline for King’s attorney to accept the settlement. No response was received, Senior Assistant City Atty. Thomas C. Hokinson said.
The parties can resume negotiations at any time. The civil trial will be delayed until a federal trial on alleged civil rights violations by the four officers is completed. Hokinson said he expects the civil trial to begin late next year.
