Racial controversy flared when South Africa’s rugby team arrived in France for its first overseas tour since a 1981 trip to New Zealand was marred by anti-apartheid protests.

Abie Malan, manager of the Springboks team, said upon arriving that South African rugby officials had rejected a request by France’s sports minister, Frederique Bredin, that a black be included on the team. Bredin responded by promising to boycott the matches.
