Collins, Andino in Third Round of Japan Surfing
Newport Beach’s Richie Collins and San Clemente’s Dino Andino advanced to the third round of the Miyazaki Pro surfing championships Thursday at Miyazaki, Japan.
Collins defeated Josh Palmateer, 20-12, in a second-round heat; Andino beat Australia’s Bryce Ellis, 22.83-18.83. Seal Beach native Marty Thomas lost to Hawaii’s Derek Ho, 19.66-7.67, and former world champion Tom Curren of Santa Barbara was upset by Hans Hedemann, 15-8.17.
Huntington Beach’s Kelly Slater, the tour points leader, received a second-round bye and will compete in today’s third round.
In the women’s division, Laguna Beach’s Alisa Schwarzstein and former Huntington Beach resident Lisa Andersen won their first-round heats and will meet in today’s quarterfinals.
