Charges Against Mortuary and Jewish Traditions
As a member of the Jewish community, I was pained to read about the discriminatory practices by the Malinow & Silverman Mortuary against a non-Jewish family (Times, Oct. 1).
According to the article, a Muslim family had asked the mortuary to transport and store the body of their stillborn son until they could make arrangements for his burial. They were not asking for a religious service. The mortuary told the grieving parents, “We don’t pick up Muslim children.” It’s hard to believe that a mortuary could be so heartless.
Malinow & Silverman justifies their action by saying that it “honors the customs and traditions held sacred by Jewish families.” I say they dishonor our traditions. Prejudice and bigotry are not held sacred by my family or by any Jewish family I know.
