Countywide : Assessor Sees Dip in Property Tax Levies
About 222,370 property tax bills totaling $473.5 million will be sent out today to owners of Ventura County real estate.
Although the bills represent a $22.1-million increase over last year, the increase is down substantially from prior years because of the recession, County Assessor R. J. (Jerry) Sanford said.
In July, Sanford estimated that thousands of Ventura County homeowners will see an average $300 savings on their property tax bills.
While the overall assessed value of commercial and residential real estate in Ventura County rose 4.34% this year, the assessed value of the average Ventura County home continued its drop from $252,000 in 1990 to $220,000 this year, Sanford said.
According to County Treasurer-Tax Collector Hal Pittman, taxpayers have the option of paying the tax in two installments. The first is due Nov. 1, and becomes delinquent after Dec. 10. The second becomes delinquent after April 10.
Payments postmarked after the deadlines will be assessed a 10% penalty, Pittman said.
