ANTELOPE VALLEY : Budget Forcing 27 More Layoffs OKd
Trustees of the financially troubled Antelope Valley Union High School District adopted a bare-bones $51.4-million budget for the 1992-93 school year on Monday that will force as many as 27 more layoffs beyond the 100-plus employees already released.
The budget calls for $45.6 million to be spent on school programs, $9.4 million less than last year. The rest of the budget will go to repay $4.5 million of a county loan that helped stave off bankruptcy and to restore a $1.5-million district contingency fund.
Finances are so tight that the district’s top business administrator is holding up a $46 request to buy a new tire for a truck. “When we can’t afford a tire, we’re getting down to the pennies,” board member Wilda Andrejcik said.
