The Sea Kings learned the fine art...
The Sea Kings learned the fine art of negotiation before the county meet. In a pre-meet practice, they said they wanted Coach Bill Sumner to shave his head if they won the girls’ seeded race.
“I said, ‘Absolutely not,’ ” Sumner said.
Next, they asked if Sumner would shave his chest hair, and he said, “Sorry.”
Finally, they asked if he would surrender his 11-year-old mustache. Sumner agreed.
The Corona del Mar girls, ranked second in the county, then upset Edison, 62-87.
“I kind of knew I’d lose my mustache, but it was a lot better than shaving my head,” Sumner said.
