Aztecs Make Quick Work of Cal State Bakersfield

San Diego State needed only 1 hour 40 minutes Thursday night to sweep past Cal State Bakersfield in a women’s volleyball match, 15-12, 15-7, 15-10, in front of 445 at Bakersfield.

Gracie Schutt led SDSU (18-6) with 14 kills and and six aces, and Pam Hope had 36 assists. Jennifer Miller landed 10 kills.

Cal State Bakersfield fell to 17-5.

Santa Clara swept the University of San Diego, 15-7, 15-5, 15-8, in front of 125 at Toso Pavilion in Santa Clara as USD could muster a kill percentage of only .043.

Santa Clara (17-7, 9-0 in the West Coast Conference) hit at a .236 clip. Lia Young and Shauna Jonas led the way with 13 and 12 kills respectively.

For USD (13-11, 4-4), Kristis Harris had 24 assists, and Jennifer Wrighton had seven kills.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Julie McKeon and Laura Richards of the University of San Diego advanced from the first round of doubles play at the All-American Championships at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades.

McKeon and Richards, the fourth-seeded team, got by Katrin Guenther and Karen van der Merwe of William and Mary, 6-1, 6-3.

In the first round of singles, Laxmi Poruri, the No. 1 seed from Stanford, defeated McKeon, 6-3, 6-4.

SOCCER

San Diego State held on tight before losing to 20th-ranked Cal State Fullerton, 1-0, in front of 1,014 in Fullerton.

SDSU fell to 7-7-1, 2-4 in the Mountain-Pacific Sports Federation. Cal State Fullerton, which got the goal from Paul McDonnell with 15 minutes left, improved to 12-4, 6-0.
