Hilltop 8, Mar Vista 7--Alex Locke tackled the Mar Vista quarterback in the end zone for a safety, then Earl Hearvey caught a 50-yard pass from backup quarterback Dennis Moore for a touchdown to win it for Hilltop (1-7, 1-4). All of Hilltop’s scoring came with less than 3:30 left. Mar Vista is 2-6, 0-5.
Avocado League
Oceanside 28, Escondido 9--Running back Chris Hamer ran for 127 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries, and quarterback John Portugal threw for 240 yards and two touchdowns on 18-for-31 passing for Oceanside (4-4, 3-2). Aaron Durley, the county’s leading receiver, caught eight passes for 146 yards and a touchdown. He now has 48 receptions. Oceanside defensive end Frankie Contreras sacked Mike Frank, recovered a fumble and ran it 30 yards for a touchdown.
San Pasqual 41, San Marcos 14--The third-ranked Eagles (8-0, 5-0) jumped out to a 35-0 halftime lead then put in the substitutes. DeSale Wallace ran for 116 yards on eight carries to lead a 288-yard rushing attack. He scored on runs of four and 71 yards. Three other San Pasqual backs, Ryan Hill (30 yards), Rick Braden (26 yards) and Terry Loyd (11 yards), had touchdown runs. Mike Berry had two interceptions to lead a defense that forced five turnovers. San Marcos is 0-7-1, 0-5.
City Central League
Crawford 13, San Diego 12--San Diego scored a touchdown with 1:56 remaining, but quarterback Rodney Jones was tackled at the three on the conversion attempt. Crawford quarterback Dominic Mosler completed eight of nine passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns for the Colts (5-3, 2-0). Mike Bell caught two passes for 100 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown. Fullback Mel Hernandez led San Diego (4-4, 1-2) with 91 yards on 15 carries.
Lincoln 40, Hoover 0--After an 0-5 start, Lincoln improved to 3-5, 3-0. Hoover (0-8, 0-3) failed to score for the third time.
City Harbor League
St. Augustine 59, Christian 7--A week after setting a school scoring record with 55 points, St. Augustine (7-1, 2-0) went four better this week. Quarterback Aaron Buckner, third in the county in passing, tossed four touchdown passes and rushed for another, and his replacement David Vacchi, added another touchdown pass. Jonathon Santos caught three touchdowns, from 34, 27 and 31 yards. Sal Navarra had a 49-yard touchdown reception, Troy Gorostiza a two-yard scoring catch and Craig DaLuz a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Christian (1-6, 1-2) scored when Duret Gray returned a Vacchi interception 30 yards for a touchdown.
Coronado 27, Marian 7--The Islanders (5-3, 3-0) set up a league showdown against St. Augustine next week with the victory at Marian (5-3, 1-2). Chad Walery rushed for 100 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries, and teammate Sean Sadler carried 10 times for 58 yards, including touchdown runs of three and 13 yards.
City Western League
USDHS 28, Mission Bay 25--Brady Walker ran for 149 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries, and quarterback Josh Merrill completed 12 of 31 passes for 103 yards and a touchdown for USDHS (3-5, 1-2). Mission Bay (4-3-1, 0-2-1) fumbled four times in the first half, and USDHS converted three of them into touchdowns. Buccaneer halfback Sunny Miller ran for two touchdowns and threw for another, and quarterback Steve Vincent was seven of 15 for 56 yards before breaking his collarbone in the second quarter.
Kearny 41, La Jolla 15--County rushing leader James Curtis (177 carries, 1,379 yards) rushed for 160 yards on 24 carries and scored on runs of five and 11 yards. The Komets (7-1, 2-0) also had four other players--Wayne Everett, Travis Kant, Aaron Cones and Seepoleta Imo--reach the end zone. Everett had an interception to go with his 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. La Jolla, which led, 7-0, fell to 1-6-1, 0-2-1.
Grossmont 3-A League
Helix 26, Mt. Miguel 0--Top-ranked Helix (8-0, 2-0) recorded its fifth shutout with the victory at Mt. Miguel (1-7, 0-3). Running back Teneil Ethridge, a junior transfer from Mt. Miguel, rushed for 146 yards on 13 carries for Helix, which gained 257 yards on the ground. Helix recovered three of its four fumbles, and Mt. Miguel recovered five of its six.
Monte Vista 29, Granite Hills 0--Ricky Berrian turned 17 carries into 154 yards and touchdowns of four and 45 yards as Monte Vista (5-3, 2-0) remained in a first-place tie with Helix. Quarterback/kicker John Acosta aided the cause with a 22-yard field and 111 yards and one touchdown on seven-of-11 passing. Robbie Robinson enabled the Monarchs to record their second shutout with an interception. Granite Hills is 3-5, 1-2.
Grossmont 2-A League
El Capitan 48, El Cajon 6--El Capitan quarterback Bobby Vickery ran for 123 yards and a touchdown on eight carries as the Vaqueros (7-1, 2-0) piled up 482 yards on the ground.
Palomar League
San Dieguito 16, Vista 13--The Mustangs (3-5, 1-4) handed Vista (4-4, 2-3) its third consecutive defeat, denying Panther Coach Dick Haines from moving into sole possession of 10th place on the national career victory list.
Rancho Buena Vista 13, Rancho Bernardo 6--Bill Pryor scored on a 21-yard run, and Von Ware caught a 22-yard pass from Joe Walters for RBV (3-5, 2-3). Griffin Fontanella scored on one-yard run for Rancho Bernardo (4-4, 1-4).
Mt Carmel 17, Fallbrook 6--Anthony Mamaril led the way with an interception and an 83-yard kickoff return that set up a field goal and gave Mt. Carmel (6-1-1, 5-0) a 10-0 advantage early in the second half. Junior running back Marlin Carey rushed for 155 yards went over 1,000 yards for the second year in a row. He now has 1,111. Fallbrook (5-3, 2-3) beat Mt. Carmel, 58-0, last year.
Eight-man Coastal League
Julian 64, Bishop’s 15--Backs Frankie Stewart and Cory Burnett combined for 231 yards for Julian (6-1, 2-1) in a game where the 45-point rule went into effect in the fourth quarter. Stewart rushed 11 times for 126 yards and three touchdowns and Burnett nine times for 105 yards and three touchdowns. Teammate Anthony Howard rushed for a touchdown and returned a kickoff 78 yards for another. Bishop’s (2-4, 1-2) got both its touchdowns from Gerald Anderson.
Nonleague
Morse 56, Serra 12--Archie Amerson scored five of eight touchdowns for second-ranked Morse (8-0). Teammates Scott Johnson scored on a 20-yard interception return, and Conan Smith scored on a 91-yard kickoff return. Serra fell to 2-6.
Mira Mesa 35, Madison 7--Quarterback Mike Nelson completed 12 of 18 passes for 270 yards and three touchdowns, and running back Mike Pittman ran 19 times for 127 yards and two touchdowns for Mira Mesa (3-5), which snapped a five-game losing streak with the victory over Madison (2-6). Josh Quinn caught six passes for 134 yards and a touchdown.
Santana 27, Grossmont 0--After tying the past two years, 13-13, Santana (5-3) shut out the Foothillers (5-3). It was the Sultans third shutout.
Patrick Henry 23, Clairemont 0--Patrick Henry (4-4) won easy over Clairemont (1-6).
