It’s Not How You Play, It’s How You Say It

I notice that The Times corrects the grammar used by athletes when their quotes are printed in the paper. I heard Curtis Conway interviewed after the Washington State game and he said, “I seen a hole and tried to get as much yardage as I could.” The Times changed each of the “seens” to saw.

I do not believe this is fair reporting. Conway is a marvelous athlete and an intelligent young man, but it seems to me that athletes who are in the limelight and become role models for our youth could set a better example for education if they would use the English language correctly. After all, they are high school graduates and university students. I do not believe it would be too difficult for athletic advisers or coaches to help their players speak simple grammar correctly.

What a plus this would be for Conway and other athletes, not only now but later as they seek their place in the business world.
