SAN DIEGO : Suspect Arrested After Abduction
After a six-hour ordeal in which she was bound, punched, suffocated and shocked with a cattle prod, a woman talked her captor into releasing her early Sunday morning and called police, who promptly arrested the assailant.
San Diego police said the suspect, 56-year-old Cole Kaplan, was a casual acquaintance of the woman. Kaplan allegedly lured her to his apartment in the 6200 block of Friars Road on the pretext that they would got to a Halloween party together.
But when she arrived at about 8 p.m., Kaplan allegedly forced the victim into the apartment, shocked her with the cattle prod and hit and nearly suffocated her with a plastic bag when she resisted, said Sgt. Larry Weeden. Kaplan then allegedly restrained her hands with plastic straps.
But after six hours, the woman managed to persuade him to let her go, Weeden said. Kaplan even walked the woman to her car and apologized for the abuse, which the woman told police she believes was motivated by her refusal to have a romantic relationship with him.
Weeden said the victim was bruised but apparently did not suffer serious injuries.
Kaplan was being held on suspicion of assault and battery and false imprisonment and other charges.
