PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Hopkins Takes a Shot at Offense

The Raiders will officially announce today that Jay Schroeder is replacing Todd Marinovich as the starting quarterback.

End of offensive problems?

Not even close, according to one Philadephia Eagle.

After taking his shots at opposing receivers all afternoon during last Sunday’s 31-10 victory over the Raiders, Eagle safety Wes Hopkins took a parting shot at the Raiders’ vertical offense, which emphasizes the long bomb.

“It looked like what I saw,” Hopkins told the Philadelphia Inquirer, “when I was about 10.”

This is the Raiders’ 11th season in Los Angeles. It might be safe to assume they have finally put their previous existence behind them.

Not totally.

Not as far as referee Tom White is concerned.

Working Sunday’s Raider-Eagle game, White flipped on his mike at one point and announced, “Time out, Oakland .”

After undergoing eight weeks of rehabilitation for a knee injury, veteran Raider guard Max Montoya, 36, made it back on the roster for last Sunday’s game. But he barely made it on the field, playing very sparingly.

That was by design.

“The plan wasn’t to use Max,” Coach Art Shell said. “We wanted to get him acclimated to game conditions. We’ll see what happens this week.”

There are no new major injuries to report for the Raiders.

Elvis Patterson, special teams player, sprained an ankle Sunday. But there was no swelling Monday and he is not expected to miss any action.
