HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL / SOUTHERN SECTION PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : Camarillo Relies on Defense, Stuns Santa Barbara
Junior quarterback Jay Nirenberg completed seven of 15 passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns and senior running back Fahali Campbell gained 160 yards in 37 carries to lead Camarillo High to a 17-7 win over Santa Barbara on Friday night in a Southern Section Division III first-round game at Santa Barbara.
Camarillo limited Santa Barbara (8-3), the second-seeded team from the Channel League, to only 43 yards rushing and recovered four fumbles and had an interception.
Camarillo lineman Brock Elder recovered his second Santa Barbara fumble midway through the second quarter at the Santa Barbara 24-yard line to set up the first Scorpion score.
Four plays later, Nirenberg tossed a 14-yard scoring pass to Bennett Wutkee for a 7-0 lead.
Camarillo lineman Jason Sandel recovered another Don fumble at the Santa Barbara 28 late in the second quarter; two plays later Nirenberg lofted a 24-yard touchdown pass to tight end Scott Tucker.
Santa Barbara quarterback Dustin Spencer threw a 14-yard touchdown screen pass to running back Ray Walker to cut the Scorpion lead to 14-7 at halftime.
