Selected City Council actions affecting Central Los Angeles in the past week.
CITY COUNCIL DONATION: Accepted a $10,000 donation from American Savings Bank to hire consultants on various economic development programs in Council District 8, which covers South-Central. MLK SHOPPING CENTER: Approved the temporary closure of Grandee Avenue between 103rd Street and Century Boulevard from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday for the opening of the Food 4 Less store in the Martin Luther King Jr. Shopping Center. The store was closed after April-May riots. CHRISTMAS TOY PARTY: Approved the temporary closure of 1st Street between Chicago and Cummings streets and St. Louis Street between Pennsylvania and 2nd streets in Boyle Heights from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 19 for the Los Angeles Police Department Hollenbeck Youth Center’s annual Christmas toy party. TEATRO DE CREATIVIDAD: Approved spending $500 from the public service funds of Council District 1 to help fund cultural programs of Teatro de Creatividad, which conducts citywide cultural programs. SCHOOL COUNSELORS: Approved spending $2,200 at the request of Councilwoman Rita Walters to rent the Los Angeles Convention Center for a School Counselor Forum on March 11, 1993. Los Angeles Unified School District counselors will attend the forum. PARK AND RECREATION BOARD GYM NAME: Approved naming the gymnasium at Cypress Park in Glassell Park the Jay Isaac Jimenez Gym. Jimenez, a former gang member who became a volunteer working with youths and gang members in the area, was shot and killed by an unknown assailant earlier this year.
HOW THEY VOTED YOUTH GANG PROJECT: Approved spending $2.5 million for the Hope in Youth organization, a group of religious denominations that have formed an anti-gang project. Requires final approval from Mayor Tom Bradley. Passed: 10-2. Voting yes: Richard Alatorre and Mike Hernandez. Mark Ridley-Thomas and Rita Walters voted no. Joan Milke Flores was absent. TAX INCENTIVES: Approved supporting state legislation to reduce by 50% the amount of state taxes owed by businesses affected by the riots. Passed: 12-0. Voting yes: Alatorre, Hernandez, Ridley-Thomas and Walters. Flores was absent. BICYCLE CZAR: Approved a proposal to begin a search for a city bicycle coordinator. The coordinator’s duties will include seeking federal and state funds for bicycle programs and promoting bicycling as an alternative means of transportation. Passed: 12-0. Voting yes: Alatorre, Hernandez, Ridley-Thomas and Walters. Flores was absent.
