No NCAA Tournament Berth for SDSU Women
The San Diego State women’s volleyball team, which finished 23-9 this season but third in the Western Athletic Conference, failed to receive an at-large berth into the 32-team NCAA tournament field, which was announced Sunday.
New Mexico, which tied for fourth place with Wyoming in the WAC, received the conference’s only at-large berth after an 18-11, 7-7 campaign.
“We worked all season to get to the point where we had a chance to go to the NCAA’s, and it’s very disappointing that we were not invited to the tournament,” SDSU Coach Myles Gabel said.
The Aztecs were 8-6 in WAC play, trailing Brigham Young (27-3, 14-0) and Fresno State (19-12, 11-3).
FOOTBALL
San Diego Section Commissioner Kendall Webb announced Saturday’s 3-A football semifinal between No. 1 seed Morse (12-0) and Orange Glen (9-3) will be played at Mesa College. The 2-A semifinal between No. 1 Torrey Pines (10-2) and San Pasqual (11-1) will be played at Vista High School. Both games begin at 7:30 p.m.
Webb is expected to release the sites of Friday’s games today.
SOFTBALL
Pitcher Amy Miner of Patrick Henry and catcher Theresa Stippey of Santana each signed softball letters of intent last week. Miner, who led the Patriots to the San Diego Section 3-A championship, committed to Cal State Long Beach. Stippey will attend Cal State Fullerton.
Fullerton and Long Beach each advanced to the 1992 College World Series, with the 49ers reaching the semifinals before losing to eventual champion UCLA.
