Still Writing After All These Years
What a joy to read your wonderful article on letter writing (“Postscript to the Personal Letter,” Nov. 1).
I write regularly to four high school classmates from our town of 680 in Wisconsin, where we graduated in 1932, and we still have a lot to say to each other.
Another special person to whom I write lives in Australia. She happened to visit us one day when she was in the country with her relatives. She and I hit if off and have corresponded on a regular basis, and I don’t mean short notes. I get and send pages of typed letters. I know her so well, even though I am not sure I would recognize her if she came to my door. Our correspondence has brought us both much pleasure--and, recently, comfort after both of us lost our only sons.
I wish more people knew the pleasure a letter brings. I wait for the postman every day.
