Foothill Coach Tom Meiss keeps a pet weasel in his office and at some point this season he decided the creature reminded him of his quarterback: Steve Wielandt. “He slips in and out of little cracks; we call him the weas,” Meiss said. “Weasels are quick and darty and sometimes Steve weasels out of the (passing) drills that I give him.” Wielandt was his elusive self Friday, gaining 190 yards and scoring three touchdowns in Foothill’s 35-28 victory over Santa Margarita in the Southern Section Division IV quarterfinals. Wielandt, who has rushed for 867 yards and passed for 876 this season, scored the winning touchdown on a 73-yard run with 3 minutes 14 seconds remaining. Santa Margarita had just tied the score, 28-28, but Wielandt scored on the second play of the ensuing drive.
Other top performers:

Sky Peterka and Jared Overton, who finished 11th and 12th in 16:03 and 16:04, respectively, in the State Division III race to lead Newport Harbor to the team cross-country title.
