PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NFL : Elway Won’t Play Against Cowboys
Denver Bronco quarterback John Elway won’t play in Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys, and Coach Dan Reeves says he may alternate between backups Shawn Moore and Tommy Maddox, each carrying in his own play from the sideline.
Elway, who sat out Denver’s two recent losses to the Raiders and Seattle because of a bruised shoulder, restricted his passes to under 15 yards on Wednesday and reported soreness on Thursday.
The injury that left Dennis Byrd partially paralyzed is causing Lawrence Taylor to consider whether he wants to play football again.
Taylor on Thursday said he still has not decided whether he will reconsider his decision to retire from the New York Giants. The linebacker, considered one of the greatest in NFL history, sustained a season-ending Achilles’ tendon injury on Nov. 8.
However, the broken neck that Byrd of the New York Jets sustained on Sunday has affected Taylor, 33.
“Right now I just hope this ankle will come back strong, and I wish the best for Dennis Byrd,” Taylor said. “I know as much as he wants to play football, something like that taught me there’s a lot of things more important than football.”
