COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Ventura Women Win Title by Defeating Cypress, 59-56
Erica Probasco made two free throws with six seconds to play and the Ventura College women’s basketball team won the championship of the Cypress tournament with a 59-56 win over Cypress on Saturday night.
Cori Herman, who scored 25 points to lead Ventura (5-1), had 68 points in three games and was selected the tournament’s most valuable player. Jennifer Wells added 15 points and 14 rebounds.
In other women’s games:
Valley 74, Modesto 62--Rosa Mendez and Angie Quezada scored 20 and 17 points to lead Valley (6-1) in the championship semifinal of the Sequoias tournament.
Pacific 69, Cal State Northridge 39--Haily Griffith (12 points) was the lone Matador to score in double figures in the nonconference game.
MEN
Canyons 76, Sequoias 73--Cedric Jones scored all four of his points on free throws in the final 30 seconds to lead Canyons (4-4) to a third-place finish in the Antelope Valley tournament. G. C. Marcaccini led Canyons with 25 points, and Bryan Camacho had 10 assists.
Oxnard 67, Naval Training Center 62--Lance Fay scored 19 points and Stevie Amar added 14 for Oxnard (6-4) in the consolation final of the Grossmont tournament.
Citrus 65, Glendale 64--Marty Johnson’s free throw with five seconds to play lifted Citrus in the third-place game of the Golden West tournament. Mike Macchia and Kenny Collins each scored 17 for Glendale (3-6).
