Valencia returns three part-time starters--Arias, Deck and Eubanks--from a team that finished fourth in the league last season. The Tigers were a game behind Western, Savanna and Brea-Olinda, and could have won the title outright if not for one-point losses to Savanna and Brea-Olinda. Cyrus lists Magnolia as the league favorite this season but adds the race should be as wide-open as last season. “If we play as well as we can, it will be a dogfight this year, just like last season,” Cyrus said. Eubanks averaged 8.6 points and Deck 7.8 points, and Cyrus expects them to double their scoring as full-time starters this season. They’ll be joined by a mix of juniors and seniors from last season’s junior varsity. Among the best newcomers is Jackley, a strong rebounder for his size, and Zamora, who was the junior varsity MVP last season. Secoda, who will join the team after the football season, is a good defender.
