PREP ROUNDUP : Katella Boys Rally, Then Defeat Estancia in Overtime
Nick Roditis scored 24 points, including four in overtime, as Katella beat Estancia, 61-55, in the first round of the La Quinta boys’ basketball tournament Monday at La Quinta High School.
Brian Carlson added 18 points for the Knights (3-2), who rallied from a six-point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter to tie the score, 53-53, at the end of regulation.
Jim Faulkner led Estancia (2-3) with 25 points.
In another La Quinta tournament game:
La Quinta 71, Torrance 44--Cory Samuels scored 20 points and Joe Linck added 13 for La Quinta.
In the Coca-Cola Converse Classic:
Kennedy 71, Los Alamitos 66--Paul Pappas scored 23 points to lead Kennedy (1-0) to a first-round victory. Steve Carbone led Los Alamitos (0-1) with 25 points, including six three-pointers.
Capistrano Valley 98, San Pasqual 51--Corey Kost had 32 points, including four three-pointers, and Brian Scoggins added 14 for host Capistrano Valley (1-0).
The Cougars led by 14 points after one quarter and were ahead, 49-24, at halftime.
Pasadena Muir 67, Esperanza 44--Jacques Vaughn had 16 points as Pasadena Muir rolled to a first-round victory.
In the Downtown Kiwanis Invitational at Costa Mesa High School:
Laguna Beach 62, Chino Boys’ Republic 31--Taylor Butcher had 16 points for Laguna Beach (2-0), which outscored Boys’ Republic, 26-3, in the fourth quarter.
Laguna Beach advanced to play Orange at 5 p.m. today. Orange had a first-round bye.
Bolsa Grande 49, Costa Mesa 39--Robert Fierro scored 12 points and Justin Briggs added seven points and 11 rebounds for Bolsa Gande (1-1). Cam Luu had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Costa Mesa (1-1).
Bolsa Grande advanced to play Saddleback at 6:40 p.m. today. Saddleback had a first-round bye.
Fullerton 61, Villa Park 49--Chad Murray had 27 points, making 13 of 18 free throws, and 14 rebounds to lead Fullerton (2-0). Ryan Hartshorn added nine points, six rebounds and two blocked shots for the Indians.
Chip Bernards scored 17 points, including three three-pointers for Villa Park (0-1).
Fullerton plays Century at 6:40 p.m. Wednesday.
In the Laguna Hills tournament:
Laguna Hills 63, Norwalk 49--Alex Hale scored 21 points for host Laguna Hills (2-0). Bryan Jones added 11 for Laguna Hills.
Dana Hills 58, Foothill 41--Justin Hinsey scored 21 points and Bob Hefty added 17 points and 13 rebounds for Dana Hills (1-1). Jared Winger had 29 points, including four three-pointers for Foothill.
In nonleague boys’ basketball:
Cypress 53, Santa Ana 49--Bart Boulton led a balanced attack with 15 points as Cypress (2-2) got by host Santa Ana (0-1).
Whittier California 55, Whittier Christian 53--Darren Glaves scored a game-high 25 points to lead Whittier California (4-1) past Whittier Christian (0-1), which got 17 points from Jeff Rutter.
In the Brea-Olinda girls’ tournament:
Brea-Olinda 73, Esperanza 46--Colleen Hudson scored 13 of her 22 points in the third quarter, when the Ladycats (5-0) outscored Esperanza, 27-9. Kristy Kierulff scored 12 points for Esperanza.
Brea-Olinda plays Troy in a quarterfinal-round game at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Troy 52, Corona 38--Troy trailed, 33-31, late in the third quarter, then scored 17 consecutive points, including 10 by Audra Gamst, who finished with 12.
Brandee Richardson had 16 points and seven rebounds for Troy (4-0) and Dinah Shah had 10 assists and six steals. Isa Noel had 19 for Corona, which plays Esperanza in a consolation-round game at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
