COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Cheaney’s Strong Finish Leads Indiana, 75-70

Calbert Cheaney scored 19 points, but it was his 15 in the second half that lifted the No. 4-ranked Hoosiers to a 75-70 victory over Notre Dame Tuesday night South Bend, Ind.

The Hoosiers (5-1) blew a 17-point first-half lead and trailed the Irish (2-1) several times in the second half, the last at 69-67 after a three-point basket by Notre Dame’s Carl Cozen with three minutes to play. But Cheaney made two free throws to tie the score, and a three-pointer with two minutes remaining put the Hoosiers ahead, 72-69.

No. 3 Kentucky 82, Eastern Kentucky 73--Kentucky had to rally in the final two minutes behind Jeff Brassow’s two three-pointers and Jamal Mashburn’s career-high 38 points and 19 rebounds to overcome lightly regarded Eastern Kentucky at Lexington.

Eastern Kentucky is 2-1. Kentucky is 3-0.

No. 8 Iowa 64, Northern Iowa 44--Iowa let a 24-point halftime lead shrink to 10 before the Hawkeyes pulled away at Iowa City.

Val Barnes scored 21 points for Iowa (4-0). Randy Blocker had 12 for Northern Iowa (1-2).

No. 11 Oklahoma 112, Idaho State 59--Jeff Webster had 19 points and Terry Evans made four of six three-pointers and finished with 18 to lead the Sooners (3-0) at Norman, Okla.

The Bengals are 0-3.

No. 14 Arizona 89, New Mexico 70--Khalid Reeves, who lost his starting spot after a five-point performance in the then-ninth-ranked Wildcats’ season-opening loss to Arkansas, scored 13 points and helped lead the defense in the Wildcats’ victory at Tucson.

The Wildcats (1-1) were led by Chris Mills, who had 18 points. The Lobos are 2-1.

No. 23 Massachusetts 70, Siena 58--Tony Barbee scored seven of his 15 points during a 19-4 second-half run as the Minutemen (2-1) beat Massachusetts (1-3) at Albany, N.Y.

Arizona State 67, San Diego State 64--Stevin Smith banked in a three-point shot at the buzzer to give Arizona State a victory at Tempe.

Utah 86, Utah State 79--Jimmy Soto scored eight of his 16 points in a 13-3 second-half run that lifted Utah (3-0) past the Aggies (1-2) at Salt Lake City.

Colorado 86, Wisconsin Green Bay 61--Donny Boyce had 25 points and six steals to lead the Buffaloes (4-0) at Boulder. Wisconsin Green Bay is 0-3.

Fresno State 77, Washington 75--Davon Satterwhite scored all of his 14 points in the second half to lift the Bulldogs (3-0) past the Huskies (2-2) at Seattle.
