PREP ROUNDUP : No. 3 Trabuco Hills Wins Tournament Opener
Brett Poulos scored 21 points and Ryan Karnoff added 20 to lead Trabuco Hills to an 83-74 victory over El Modena in the first round of the Coca Cola-Converse Classic boys’ basketball tournament Tuesday at Trabuco Hills High School.
Trabuco Hills (3-0), ranked third in the preseason Orange County poll, advanced to play Long Beach Poly, a 63-45 winner over University, in the 8 p.m. quarterfinal tonight at Trabuco Hills.
Aaron Aguilera scored 21 points and teammate Tyler Wood added 16 for El Modena.
In other Coca Cola-Converse Classic games:
Santa Margarita 69, Oceanside El Camino 68--Bryan Young scored 15 points as Santa Margarita (1-0) held off a late charge by El Camino (0-1). The Eagles play Lynwood, a 53-40 winner over Savanna, in a 6:30 p.m. quarterfinal tonight at Capistrano Valley.
Los Alamitos 94, Escondido San Pasqual 67--Ryan Staniec scored 21 points, Steve Carbone 17, and Brady Doyle had 14 points and 13 rebounds for Los Alamitos (5-1). Ernie Silva scored 30 points, including six three-pointers, for San Pasqual in a consolation game.
In the Downtown Kiwanis Invitational:
Bolsa Grande 40, Saddleback 38--James Britton scored 14 points for Bolsa Grande.
Calvary Chapel 59, Southern California Christian 43--David Hesterly scored 16 points to lead Calvary Chapel (1-1). Josh Cameron scored 21 points for Southern California Christian (0-2).
In the El Dorado Co-Ed Classic boys’ basketball tournament:
Sunny Hills 56, Downey 46--Mario Bertuol scored 17 points for Sunny Hills (1-3).
In the first round of the La Quinta tournament:
Corona del Mar 75, Garden Grove 57--Todd Merriman had 25 points and eight steals and teammate Preston Smead added 24 points for Corona del Mar (3-2). Cornel Archer had 15 points for Garden Grove (0-4).
Cypress 62, Westminster 61--Brett Bolton scored 13 points for Cypress, which made 15 of 18 free throws in the fourth quarter. Brady Okura scored 15 points for Westminster.
In nonleague play:
La Habra 67, La Serna 50--Eddy Glover scored 21 points to lead La Habra (4-1) over La Serna (2-2).
Liberty Christian 87, Harbor City Gateway Christian 68--Toby Curto scored 45 points for Liberty Christian (3-2).
St. Margaret’s 74, Oceanside Army-Navy 51--Sophomore Damian Raibon had 31 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots for host St. Margaret’s (2-1).
Troy 71, Pomona Ganesha 46--Greg Abbott scored 19 points for visiting Troy (3-1).
In the first round of the Brea-Olinda girls’ basketball tournament:
Ocean View 54, Fontana 45--Theresa Martini scored 14 points for Ocean View (4-1).
Rancho Alamitos 67, Mission Viejo 43--Akilah Rodgers scored 17 points for Rancho Alamitos (1-0). Mission Viejo is 2-1.
In the Savanna tournament quarterfinals:
Cypress 56, Trabuco Hills 41--Jessica Eggleston had 24 points and 19 rebounds and Susan Fleming had 14 points and eight assists for Cypress (4-0). Trabuco Hills is 2-2.
Savanna 53, Alta Loma 48 (OT)--Sara Works scored 22 points, including three in overtime, for host Savanna (2-0).
In nonleague girls’ basketball:
Capistrano Valley Christian 62, St. Margaret’s 35--Marcy Giosa had 16 points and seven assists and Heidi Elliott had 12 points and 11 rebounds for host Capistrano Valley Christian (3-1). Shey Trette had 12 points for St. Margaret’s.
Dana Hills 59, Santa Ana Valley 24--Adara Newidouski scored 20 points and Karen Grossman added 19 to lead Dana Hills (2-2) over Santa Ana Valley (0-4).
San Clemente 54, Laguna Hills 26--Michelle MacIntyre scored 20 points and Heather Newell had 11 points and 14 rebounds for San Clemente (2-2). Becky Feniello had 13 points for Laguna Hills (0-3).

Sonora 4, Santiago 0--Freddie Martinez scored two goals to lead Sonora (2-1) over Santiago (0-1-1).
Santa Ana 2, Orange 0--Oscar and Armando Hernandez scored goals to lead fourth-ranked Santa Ana (1-0) past No. 3 Orange (1-1-1).
In the quarterfinals of the Irvine girls’ soccer tournament:
El Toro 3, Trabuco Hills 1--Jenny Kleugel, Yvonne Dalton and Becky Kaminsky each had a goal for El Toro (4-0). Shannon Pickett had 11 saves for Trabuco Hills (2-1).
Laguna Hills 4, San Clemente 1--Nicole Restivo scored two goals and Carrie Gayer had three assists for Laguna Hills (3-1).
Newport Harbor 1, Estancia 0--Jill Nelson scored late in the second half and goalkeeper Kim DeMayo recorded a shutout to lead Newport Harbor (3-0) past Estancia (2-2).
In nonleague girls’ soccer:
Bolsa Grande 10, Buena Park 2--Jenny Miller scored three goals and freshman Jenny Drake added two for Bolsa Grande (2-1).
Canyon 1, Los Alamitos 0--Kim Campbell scored a first-half goal for visiting Canyon (3-0). Goalie Heather Thomas had eight saves for Los Alamitos (0-2).
Katella 5, Savanna 1--Lisa Dale and Pam Schenk both scored twice for Katella (3-0).
La Habra 3, Loara 1--Amber Duarte scored three goals to lead La Habra (1-2) over Loara.
