Although he has never coached a girls’ team before, Furr is taking the plunge with the Mariners. And his eyes are being opened. “It’s different,” Furr said. “I’m in a real learning process.” Furr, who has been out of coaching for 14 years, was a graduate assistant at Virginia. He also coached in high schools in Virginia, Arizona and Colorado. His last coaching job was at Cochise County Community College in Douglas, Ariz. At Pacifica, Furr said he’s trying to implement “a lot of things they’ve (girls) never seen before,” but he added that the team “has a great attitude.” The Mariners feature only one returning starter in Stark, one of the tallest players in the league. “We have a very young team,” Furr said. Young, but the Mariners have a good core of returning players and newcomers. Peck and Rummel give Pacifica additional size up front, and Surch is a capable point guard. “Pilar is the key,” Furr said. “She’s going to switch between point guard and off guard. She’s a good all-around player.” The Mariners finished tied for fourth last season with Santiago, their best showing since rejoining the Garden Grove League in 1988-89 after playing a few seasons in the Empire League.
