The Saints have experience, an all-league player returning in Trotter and depth. What Santa Ana doesn’t have is size. Lumley is the only player over 5-9, and most of the Saints are in the 5-6 range. “Without any six-footers, the toughest league in the county gets tougher,” Dukus said. Of course, having nine players back, including all five starters, should help. Leading the way is Trotter, who averaged 10 points in league last year but is expected by the league’s coaches to improve on that this year. “She’s a great talent who’s becoming a great player,” Westminster Coach Dick Katz said. “I think she’s one of the best players in the county.” Santa Ana also hopes to have another player average in double figures to take some of the pressure of Trotter. Lumley and Gonzalez are the two most likely to improve on last year’s averages. As a small team, Santa Ana is naturally deep at the guard spots, led by Perez and Romero. The Saints will play the role of the spoiler in league because of their commitment to defense.
