Tennessee Chattanooga Beats Waves
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Tim Brooks was selected the tournament’s most valuable player after getting 28 points and seven assists to lead Tennessee Chattanooga to an 80-67 victory over Pepperdine Wednesday night in the championship game of the Dr. Pepper Classic.
Tennessee Chattanooga (6-4) scored 13 consecutive points to take a 60-46 lead on a three-pointer by Brooks with 11:21 left.
Pepperdine (6-3) rallied to within 67-61 on a basket by LeRoi O’Brien with 7:04 left, but the Moccasins closed the game with a 13-6 run.
Tennessee Chattanooga had a 41-28 lead with 1:28 left in the first half, but the Waves scored the last five points of the half, closing to within 41-33 on a three-pointer by Damon Lopez at the buzzer.
Pepperdine came out firing after halftime, getting to within 47-46 on a layup by Dana Jones with 15:53 remaining before the Moccasins went on their 13-0 burst.
Byron Jenson, who was named to the all-tournament team, had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Pepperdine, Lopez scored 17 and Jones 12.
The Waves, who had a four-game winning streak snapped, won six of nine games on the road in December. Pepperdine plays its next five games at Malibu.
