Speaking Of. . . : Foreign Students
The number of international students in U.S higher education reached a new high in the 1991-92 academic year. Students from other nations constitute just under 3% of total U.S. enrollment of 14.3 million, but they represent one-third of all students studying abroad worldwide.
Asian students account for nearly 60% of total international students, and more than half of Asian students are enrolled at the graduate level.
Engineering ranked as the top field of study for international students in the United States for 35 years until the 1989-90 academic year. Since then, business/management has been the most popular field.
The number of international students from Latin America, Africa and the Middle East has fallen steadily throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. Less than 15 years ago, the Middle East, fueled by oil wealth, accounted for nearly 30% of all international students here.
The percentage of women among international students has been growing since the 1980s. In 1991-92, they accounted for a record 152,400 international students, or 36% of the total.
