University Latest Bell Victim
Armando Sanchez made 19 saves for University High, but his efforts weren’t enough to hold off Bell’s constant bombardment in a second-round City Section playoff game Friday.
Two of the Eagles’ onslaught of 30 shots got by Sanchez, and the 2-0 victory advanced Bell (9-2-2) to next round of the playoffs Tuesday at Fremont.
University’s defense held off the Eagles until the 34th minute of the second half, when Bell forward Daniel Ron sent a soft lob from the midfield into the Warrior penalty area. Sanchez went out to catch the fly ball, but Bell right winger Ernesto Serratos intercepted it and knocked a header over Sanchez’s arms into the open net.
The Warriors (8-3-2), who had only nine shots on goal, came close to tying the score on a cannon shot by senior Jorge Rodriguez that Eagle goalie Marco Landeros couldn’t handle. But as the ball rolled toward the unprotected net, Ron raced to the goal line and pounded the ball away.
Bell’s other goal was scored seconds before the end of the match when midfielder Filiberto Madrigal pounded the ball in from point-blank range.
