SIMI VALLEY : City Honors 3 Youths for Storm Rescue
Simi Valley Mayor Greg Stratton on Monday honored three Simi Valley High School youths who rescued an 11-year-old boy earlier this month who was struggling to stay afloat in a rain-swollen flood control channel.
Stratton gave a written commendation to Trey Richardson, 15; James Doll, 15; and Mark Harris, 16, during a City Council meeting.
The teen-agers rescued Darren Hewlett of Simi Valley, who tried to use a boogie board in the Arroyo Simi channel during a storm Jan. 7. Darren lost control of the board and cried for help, catching the attention of the high school students.
The teen-age rescuers called 911 and pulled Darren from the channel while waiting for help. The boy was not injured, authorities said.
