CAPE TOWN : Parliament Opens
The South African Parliament opens for what may be its final session Friday, amid hopes that a revival of multi-party negotiations on the country’s future is only weeks away.
President Frederik W. de Klerk will open the session following a week of closed-door meetings with the African National Congress at which progress was said to be made on bringing South African security forces under joint black-white control.
However, De Klerk has yet to win over Zulu chief Mangosuthu Gatsha Buthelezi, who has refused to return to the multi-party talks after quitting them last fall in protest over agreements made between the government and the ANC.
