CS Long Beach’s Streak Ends : Big West: The 49ers, who had won 20 in a row in their gym, lose to UC Santa Barbara, 68-59.
Two power outages caused by lightning strikes resulted in suspension of play for a total of 26 minutes Saturday night during a Big West Conference game between the host 49ers and UC Santa Barbara at the Cal State Long Beach gym.
That wasn’t the only power drain.
Still flush from its 64-49 victory over Kansas on Monday, Long Beach (14-4, 6-3) saw its 20-game home winning streak ended by the Gauchos, 68-59.
Santa Barbara (10-6, 3-5), which had lost five of its last six, committed 23 turnovers, but made 24 of 40 field goal attempts and stayed close in rebounding, 24-21.
A technical foul against 49er Coach Seth Greenberg with 55 seconds remaining in the game was all the positive energy Santa Barbara needed. The Gauchos led, 61-57, at the time and forward Paul Johnson, who finished with 10 points, made both free throws.
The Gauchos were led by guard Idris Jones, who scored a career-high 27 points.
Looking totally unlike the team that upset Kansas, the 49ers survived 11 first-half turnovers and held a 33-29 lead.
A lay-in by Jones tied the score at 11 with eight and a half minutes gone in the game after Brian Camper’s turnover at midcourt.
A dunk by Lucious Harris gave Long Beach a 15-11 lead two minutes later, but Phillip Turner, after a Harris turnover and two free throws by Johnson, tied the score at 17-17 with 7:34 to go.
Then, for a moment, the 49ers showed some of the moxie they had against Kansas.
Bryon Russell grabbed a defensive rebound and eventually passed to Chris Tower for a lay-in and a 19-17 lead with 6:45 to play in the half. Russell passed to Camper for another lay-in and a four-point lead 20 seconds later.
Tower stepped in front of a Michael Meyer pass at the Gaucho end and that led to an 18-footer by Camper, then Harris stole another pass and lobbed the ball to Russell for a dunk with 5:28 to go. Long Beach led by 25-17.
That’s where the 49ers stopped. The defense displayed by the 49ers in Kansas was nonexistent during the second half.
Five consecutive three-pointers by Jones spurred a 24-13 run by the Gauchos, who led by 53-46 with 10:27 to play.
Harris got the 49ers even, 55-55, with 6:55 to go with a 12-foot jumper and two free throws.
But Harris couldn’t do it all, as his teammates seemingly wanted him to. Jones’ 12-foot shot over Harris with 4:39 to play put the Gauchos ahead for good, 57-55. Harris missed three three-point attempts and turned over the ball on a charging call in the final 1:56.
