TENNIS ROUNDUP : Fifth-Seeded Grabb Upset by Shelton at San Francisco
Bryan Shelton upset fifth-seeded Jim Grabb, 6-7 (7-4), 6-3, 7-6 (9-7), Tuesday during the first round of the Volvo-San Francisco tennis tournament.
Shelton, who broke Grabb in the opening game of the final set, lost only one point on his serve until Grabb broke back in the 10th game to even the set.
Shelton, ranked 122nd in the world, dropped the first set when he lost the last six points of the tiebreaker. He played better in the second tiebreaker, taking five of the last six points.
In other first-round matches, sixth-seeded Jeff Tarango beat Neil Borwick, 6-4, 6-4, No. 7 Richey Reneberg beat Jacco Eltingh, 6-1, 6-1, and qualifier Dave Randall beat Richard Fromberg, 6-4, 7-6 (6-3).

At Marseille, France, top-seeded Ivan Lendl, rebounding from a first-round loss at the Australian Open, swept Kenneth Carlsen, 6-3, 6-4. Sergi Bruguera, seeded second, beat Martin Damm, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. No. 4 Amos Mansdorf beat Mikael Stadling, 6-4, 6-2, and No. 7 Jakob Hlasek beat Olivier Delaitre, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.

Third-seeded Martina Navratilova needed two hours to defeat Japanese qualifier Ai Sugiyama in the first round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open at Yokohama, Japan.
No. 4 Jana Novotna defeated wild-card entry Kyoko Nagatsuka, 6-0, 6-1 and No. 5 Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere beat Michelle Jaggard-Lai, 6-3, 6-3.
