Breakup of L.A School District

I agree with Councilman Wachs when he said, “The Los Angeles Unified School District has become an unresponsive, unmanageable and unaccountable bureaucracy.” I disagree, however with his position that “It is in desperate need of reform.” Rather, it needs to be eliminated entirely.

As a black parent, I suggest that rather than mounting a movement to secede from LAUSD, the Valley residents should join with the various other communities and organizations to completely eliminate the LAUSD. No one needs this “self-serving” board of education. No one needs the inefficient, high-priced school district.

The solution is to keep it simple and to keep it local. A very small administrative staff could disperse the funds from the state directly to the schools and certify vendors for the schools to use for services. Decisions could be made by local community committees. Yes, this is a gross oversimplification and it will take a lot of work and planning.

I think that the parents, taxpayers, and business leaders have had enough and all should be willing to pull together to eliminate the Los Angeles Unified School District. The strong forces that are now divided over the splitting of the LAUSD should be united to eliminate it.
