COLLEGE BASKETBALL PACIFIC 10 CONFERENCE ROUNDUP : Arizona Defeats Washington, 81-72
Arizona keeps rolling along in Pacific 10 Conference play, defeating Washington, 81-72, Saturday at Seattle.
The Wildcats remained on target to become the first Pac-10 team to go undefeated in conference play since UCLA went 14-0 in the Pac-8 in 1978.
Arizona, 17-2 overall and 11-0 in the Pac-10, has won 15 games in a row.
Khalid Reeves scored 15 points and Chris Mills 14 for the Wildcats, who had six players in double figures.
Arizona led by 24 points three times in the second half in recording its first victory at Seattle in three seasons.
Rich Manning led Washington (11-9, 5-6) with 23 points, 15 in the first half. Chandler Nairn added 11 for the Huskies.
Damon Stoudamire scored 11 points and Ray Owes, Ed Stokes and Reggie Geary each had 10 for Arizona. Starting guards Reeves and Stoudamire outscored Washington’s starting guards, Prentiss Perkins and Bryant Boston, 26-2.
Leading, 46-30, at halftime, the Wildcats broke open the game in the second half when they took a 63-39 lead 6:28 into the period.
Owes scored Arizona’s first three baskets in the opening 2:25 of the second half.
With Arizona leading, 29-27, after an 18-footer by Manning with 5:39 to play in the first half, Mills started a 12-0 run with a three-point basket. Mills also had a 15-footer and Reeves had four points during the run.
It was Arizona’s 13th victory in 15 games against Washington. The Wildcats beat the Huskies, 93-76, at Tucson earlier this season.
Washington State 97, Arizona State 67--Bennie Seltzer scored 30 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Cougars defeated the Sun Devils at Pullman, Wash.
The victory enabled Washington State (13-6, 7-4) to pull into a second-place tie with Arizona State (13-6, 7-4) in the Pac-10.
The margin of victory was the largest in the 33 years the schools have played each other.
The Cougars played without starting forward Rob Corkrum, who sprained his ankle during pregame warm-ups.
