NHL ROUNDUP : Philadelphia Rallies to Tie Calgary
Goaltender Tommy Soderstrom came off the bench to shut down Calgary for the last two periods and overtime, to help the Philadelphia Flyers recover for a 4-4 tie with the Flames Tuesday night.
The game was played in Cincinnati as one of 23 NHL contests held at neutral sites this season.
The crowd of 7,973 was less than half Riverfront Coliseum’s capacity.
Soderstrom replaced Dominic Roussel at the start of the second period with Philadelphia trailing, 4-2, and made several saves to prevent the Flames from running away.
The Flyers rallied behind Soderstrom, tying it on Rod Brind’Amour’s goal in the second period and Brent Fedyk’s power-play goal early in the third. Soderstrom then stopped an open shot by Calgary’s Theoren Fleury at the end of regulation.
“We had that rough first period,” said Eric Lindros, who scored the Flyers’ first goal. “It was good to see Rod Brind’Amour’s line take charge and really play strong in the second and third periods.”
Calgary hung on to extend its unbeaten streak to eight games, including two ties.
New York Islanders 7, Edmonton 2--Pierre Turgeon scored just 34 seconds into the game, and six other Islanders had goals in their victory over the Oilers at Uniondale, N.Y.
Turgeon beat Ron Tugnutt from in close on the Islanders’ first shot of the game for his 36th goal of the season. Benoit Hogue had a goal on a penalty shot, and Dennis Vaske had his first NHL goal and Derek King extended his point streak to nine games with a goal at 12:12 for New York.
“We weren’t coordinated in our attack, we had no balance in our game and our equilibrium in our skill level disappeared,” Edmonton Coach Ted Green said. “We took a David Copperfield. Our whole game was gone.”
Travis Green, Marty McInnis and Pat Flatley also had goals for the Islanders.
Washington 4, San Jose 3--Peter Bondra scored a first period goal and Dimitri Khristich and Dale Hunter added goals in the second period to lead the Capitals at San Jose.
Washington also received a goal from Michal Pivonka in the third period as the Capitals moved four points ahead of the New York Rangers for second place in the Patrick Division.
Hubie McDonough scored a goal in the second period and David Williams and Dean Evason added goals in the third for San Jose.
