COSTA MESA : Suspect in Slaying of Student Arrested
A 20-year-old man wanted in connection with the slaying of a college student last year was arrested Tuesday in Newark, N. J., police said.
Homicide detectives from Costa Mesa and Newark police arrested Chung Yen Yin without incident, Costa Mesa Police Sgt. Mike Millington said.
Yin and a Los Angeles man, Chung Chung Kao, 31, are suspects in the Dec. 2 slaying of Chung (Kevin) Long Lu, a Costa Mesa resident and Orange Coast College student.
Lu was discovered dead in his car in a parking lot at 688 W. Baker St. The 24-year-old had been shot in the head. Lu’s passenger, I Hao Chen, was shot at but was not hurt, authorities said.
Nine days after the slaying, police arrested Kao in El Monte. He is in custody awaiting trial scheduled for May 4, Deputy Dist. Atty. Randy Pawloski said.
Police said they have not established a motive in the slaying.
It did not appear that Lu knew the suspects and was waiting to pick up his girlfriend, who worked nearby, police said.
Millington said homicide detectives think Yin has been on the East Coast for about one month. It was not clear what Yin was doing there, Millington said. Yin lived in both Garden Grove and Irvine.
Investigators on Tuesday said Yin was being held in Newark pending an extradition hearing.
