Man Dies as Stalled Car Is Struck
A 34-year-old North Hollywood man was killed Saturday when he was struck by a drunk driver on the San Diego Freeway as he was pouring gas into his stalled vehicle, the California Highway Patrol said.
The man, whose name was not disclosed pending notification of relatives, was pronounced dead at the scene just after the 2 a.m. accident on the San Diego Freeway near the Ventura Freeway, said CHP Sgt. Richard Sirovy. The man’s car was on the right shoulder at the time of the accident, Sirovy said.
The driver who hit the man, Rafael Martin, 36, of Saugus, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, Sirovy said. Martin’s car apparently swerved and struck the pedestrian and his stalled vehicle. Martin was treated for injuries at the scene and then arrested, Sirovy said.
