PREP PREVIEW / BOYS TRACK : TEAMS TO WATCH : MISSION VIEJO
Coach: Gene Gurule (first year).
1992: South Coast League champions, runner-up at Katella Relays and Santa Ana Relays.
Key returners: T.J. Brown, Sr.; Rusty Burnett, Sr.; Matt Denny, Sr.; Erick Fielding, Sr.; Jonathan Galaviz, Sr.; J.J. Jones, Jr.; Jeff Mocny, Sr.; Bill Pedigo, Sr.
Key newcomers: Aaron Lynn, Jr.; Andrew Morgan, So.
Outlook: Gurule returns to Mission Viejo after a stint at Saddleback College. While at Mission Viejo, Gurule led the Diablos to a 42-0 dual meet record and a state co-championship in 1982. This season’s team might not be that good. Then again, that state championship team consisted of one excellent hurdler--Steve Kerho--and that was it. This team is strong in the sprints and capable, though untested, in the distances. The field events aren’t too shabby, either. The Diablos ran to a school record of 42.61 in the 400 relay, and all but one of the four runners return. Fielding, who also plays on the baseball team, Galaviz and Mocny are back. Brown threw the discus 150-0 and the shotput 53-0. Denny has long-jumped 21-1 and triple-jumped 43-0.
