PREP PREVIEW / BOYS TRACK : TEAMS TO WATCH : WOODBRIDGE
Coach: George Varvas (13th year).
1992: Fourth at Southern Section 3-A finals, Sea View League champions.
Key returners: Mark Backoff, Jr.; Takahrio Bamba, Sr.; Jeff Clark, Sr.; Justin Crumpler, Sr.; Deron Gibbs, So.; Tony Muniz, Jr.; Rich Rommelfanger, Jr.; Eddie Yoshida, Jr.; Gary Young, Jr.
Key newcomers: Tim Duffy, Sr.; Steve Forte, So.
Outlook: The only apparent shortcoming in the Warriors’ chances for Orange County supremacy is a decided lack of distance runners. They are strong everywhere else, however, and that makes them a contender for league, county and section championships. Young, who ran 10.96 for 100 meters, is the county’s second-fastest returning sprinter and figures to take a stab at being the county’s fastest man this year. Muniz follows a long line of older brothers onto the Warriors’ track, but he doesn’t hurdle like the others. He is strictly a jumper--high and triple, in particular. Clark’s best of 13-9 in the pole vault last year ranked him among the county’s top four, a position he figures to improve upon this season.
