LONG BEACH : 2 Shot in Confrontation on Shoulder of Freeway

Two Bellflower men were shot and seriously wounded Tuesday on the Long Beach Freeway in an apparent dispute with a motorist who fired on them as they chased him on foot with a baseball bat and iron pipe, authorities said.

Witnesses said the battle erupted at about 5 p.m. near Del Amo Boulevard when 30-year-old Jose G. Vargas and his brother, Jose D. Vargas, 22, pulled their truck over on the freeway and confronted a motorist who had also pulled over in a yellow van. The two men, armed with the bat and pipe, began chasing the van driver along the shoulder of the freeway, Long Beach police said. The van driver then pulled a gun and shot his pursuers.
