WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PACIFIC 10 ROUNDUP : USC Falls Short Against Arizona State, 64-55
The 15th-ranked USC women’s basketball team fell behind early and never caught up, losing to Arizona State, 64-55, at the Sports Arena Thursday night.
The loss knocked USC, which shot only 36.9%, out of a tie with Stanford for first place in the Pacific 10 Conference.
The Sun Devils took a 13-4 lead in the early going. Led by Stacey Johnson, who scored 21 points, Arizona State didn’t trail after taking a 14-point halftime lead.
USC opened the second half with a 16-4 run to cut the lead to 43-41 with 10:01 remaining in the game, but with USC center Lisa Leslie in foul trouble, the Sun Devils scored eight unanswered points to pull away.
USC falls to 20-6 overall, 13-4 in the conference, giving Stanford sole possession of first place with one game remaining for both teams.
Arizona 91, UCLA 83--Shawn Coder scored 22 points to offset 27 points by the Bruins’ Amy Jalewalia at Pauley Pavilion.
The Wildcats outscored UCLA 30-15 to break a 50-50 tie.
The loss drops UCLA to 12-14, 7-10 in conference. Arizona raised its record to 13-13 and 7-10.
