The University High boys’ tennis squad, the county’s top-ranked team, traveled to the site of its last league defeat, but the result was much different this time.

University, 21-1 in league over the last three seasons, avenged last season’s loss to Woodbridge with a 13-5 victory Wednesday at the North Lake Tennis Center.

The Trojans (4-0, 2-0), ranked No. 3 in the Southern Section, relied heavily on their singles play, winning eight of nine sets.

Junior Jason Meyers, with a 6-0, 6-2, 6-1 sweep, led University in its singles drive. The serve was the key to Meyers’ 6-1 victory in the final set against Woodbridge’s No. 3 player, Yoshi Suzuki.

“I felt really confident and hopefully I’ll keep up the victories,” said Meyers, who had two aces. “(The victory) was good for our team esteem. It was confidence and focus, more than technique.”

Senior Eric Peterson, No. 3 singles player for University, also swept his match, 6-2, 6-3 and 6-1. Junior Robbie Wilkins posted 6-2, 6-1 victories against Adam Call and Suzuki, Nos. 2 and 3 for the Warriors (5-2, 0-2), but fell, 6-3, to No. 1 player Bobby Lee.

“The team’s coming along, but we still need to improve in doubles,” University Coach Josh Davis said. “Our No. 1 doubles team came out and played great. They’re really starting to develop.”

In the top doubles position, Barry Martin and Ross Ellis served and volleyed to win, 6-4, 7-5, 6-3. Martin and Ellis are 9-0.

Martin, who missed the match against the Warriors last season because of a wrist injury, was especially satisfied.

“I had to win,” Martin said. “I sort of took the blame (for last year’s loss).

“(The win) proves we’re one of the top, if not the top, team in the county,” Martin said.
