Assessing Gifts

Reading the editorial (“Gifts That Can Prove Very Costly,” March 10) about our supervisors’ setting limits on gifts that public officials (themselves) may receive from special interests makes one yearn for a local equivalent of New Yorker magazine’s “How’s That Again?” column.

Let me see if I follow the logic. The board is passing some sort of an ordinance which would limit gifts to themselves. They have all received gifts over the past years. The conclusion must be drawn that, in return for these gifts, some improper considerations were granted to the givers, otherwise such an ordinance would be unnecessary.

The Times thinks they are on the “right track.” How about all of them getting on the same train that took Don Roth away?
