COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Seper’s Hit in Ninth Helps Valley Overcome Santa Barbara
Vic Seper’s bases-loaded single drove in Brian Gordon with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Valley College a 6-5 comeback victory over Santa Barbara City College in a Western State Conference baseball game Tuesday at Van Nuys.
Valley (11-10 overall, 10-5 in conference play), trailed, 4-0, after 3 1/2 innings, but the Monarchs scored two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth--on David Stevenson’s fourth home run of the season--to take a 5-4 lead.
Santa Barbara (11-10, 7-7) scored a run in the sixth to tie the score, 5-5, setting the stage for Valley’s winning rally.
Seper (two hits) also singled home Valley’s first run of the game, and teammate Ozzie Areu had three hits and scored a run.
In other baseball games:
Canyons 9, Oxnard 4--Ari Jacobs, who was three for five, broke open a 4-2 game with a two-out, two-run single in the sixth inning of a WSC game.
Cody Beaumaster (3-1) scattered seven hits over seven innings to earn the victory for Canyons (16-3, 13-1). Doug Maggiora pitched two scoreless innings for his second save of the season.
Oxnard is 6-15 and 2-12.
Pierce 6, Bakersfield 0--Danny Rodriguez and Chris Frith-Smith combined on a six-hitter at Woodland Hills to help the Brahmas (11-8, 9-6) post their sixth victory in their last seven WSC games.
Rodriguez (3-1) allowed six hits, struck out five batters and walked two in seven innings. Frith-Smith retired all six batters he faced to pick up his third save.
Jason Cohen and Lou Tapia each had two hits and one RBI for Pierce.
Chaffey 7, Mission 3--Pitcher Eric Diaz (3-1) suffered his first loss and Mission’s three-game winning streak was snapped. Joey Gandara was two for two with an RBI for Mission (16-7) in the nonconference game.
Point Loma Nazarene 5, The Master’s 2--Jayme Riggio was three for four with one RBI and scored a run, but the Mustangs fell short in the NAIA District 3 game at Point Loma Nazarene.
The game was called after eight innings because of darkness.
Riggio singled home Russ Henzie to cut the Mustangs’ deficit to 5-1 in the fifth and Riggio doubled with one out in the seventh and scored on Kevin Claytor’s double.
Chris Beck took the loss for Master’s (16-10). He allowed 10 hits and struck out eight batters while going the distance.
MEN’S TENNIS
Pierce 7, Santa Barbara City 2--Pierce won five of six singles matches in the WSC match at Santa Barbara.
Al Martinez, John Rom, Vanya Nadali, Philip Leonhardt, and Simaan Hawa were victorious in singles play for Pierce, which won its 23rd consecutive WSC match.
