BURBANK : Date to Clear Weeds May Be Changed

Wet weather may push back this year’s deadlines for 170 property owners in Burbank to clear out their weeds, a county official said.

“If you go out and cut your weeds next week, that may be too soon,” said Mel Makos, bureau chief for the weed abatement program for the Los Angeles County agricultural commissioner.

The deadline fluctuates according to municipality, the type of equipment the county would use and the weather.

April 1 is the “generic” deadline, as Makos calls it, but because of heavy rain this year with more wet weather expected, that deadline will probably be pushed back. The county recommends that weeds be cut when they start to dry out and brown, Makos said.

“This year, who knows,” Makos said. “This year we may get into June if the weather is cool.”

A public hearing was held March 2 in Burbank to notify 170 owners that weeds on their properties, when dried, pose a fire risk and need to be cut down. Owners can choose either to clear the property themselves or let the county do it and pay the cost.
