Hopefuls in Runoff for Vacant Espy House Seat
JACKSON, Miss. — The lone Republican candidate in the race and the Democrat with the most party backing headed for a runoff Tuesday in the primary to replace Agriculture Secretary Mike Espy in Congress.
With 90% of 393 precincts counted, GOP hopeful Hayes Dent captured 33,063 votes, or 35%, in the sprawling 2nd District, where only one Republican has served in this century.
Hinds County supervisor Bennie Thompson got 26,263 votes, or 28%, and will face Dent in a runoff April 13. Espy’s older brother, Henry, came in third with 18,209 votes, or 19%.
