‘Falling Down’: Hollywood Racism
I found Park’s critique interesting but redundant. With a few changes, Park’s article could have been written by a black-, brown- or red-skinned individual 10, 20, or 30 years ago. When Park gets a little older, she will realize that stereotyping is stereotypical of many whites.
I am a black woman with many white friends and acquaintances. It is astounding how often I have to stop them in mid-sentence to correct a stereotypical statement or misconception they’ve uttered. For all intents and purposes, many American whites view this country as their exclusive property. The term “all-American” refers to white citizens. “American” is synonymous with whiteness. Individuals who possess a different skin color are identified by a prefix: African -American, Mexican -American, etc. How often does one hear the term European -American? We are all Americans.
