1993 PREP BASKETBALL / Los Angeles Times ALL-STARS : 20 Players Who Got Their Points Across on the Court : Boys: Although an injury keeps La Canada center Richard Mandeville off the squad, the 1993 team has plenty of punch.
The 1992-93 season proved to be a successful one for Glendale-area boys’ basketball teams.
St. Francis and La Canada won league championships, Crescenta Valley and La Canada advanced to the semifinals of the Southern Section playoffs, and Franklin advanced to the City 3-A quarterfinals.
The marquee player in the area figured to be La Canada center Richard Mandeville. But the 6-foot-11 senior suffered a leg injury early in the season.
With Mandeville out, several other players enhanced their reputations. Their efforts helped the Glendale area maintain its reputation as a force within the Southern and City sections.
Ten of those players have been chosen to The Times’ 1993 Glendale all-star team. The players were selected based upon ballots received from area coaches, all of whom were asked to participate.
Players selected to the first team will be honored at a breakfast April 18 at the Pasadena Hilton. The area player and coach of the year will also be announced at the breakfast.
Here is a player-by-player look at the team:
Peter Bishop, Ribet Academy--Bishop, a 6-2 senior, averaged 20 points, nine rebounds and four assists for the Fighting Frogs, who advanced to the Southern Section playoffs.
David Craig, St. Francis--Craig, a 6-6 senior, was one of the key players for a Golden Knight team that won the Del Rey League championship. Craig averaged 15.4 points and 8.4 rebounds.
Chirag Desai, Glendale Academy--Desai, an outstanding perimeter shooter, carried the offense for his team, averaging 23 points and four rebounds.
Adam Jacobsen, Crescenta Valley--After transferring from Glendora, where he was a Times’ All-San Gabriel Valley selection last season, Jacobsen helped lead the Falcons to the semifinals of the Southern Section playoffs. Jacobsen, a 6-3 senior, averaged 27.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 5.9 assists for the Falcons. He will play at Pacific in the fall.
Marshall Kim, Marshall--The senior guard averaged 17 points and used his quickness and court sense to lead Marshall to the City playoffs.
Eddie Powell, Verdugo Hills--Powell, a 5-10 junior, averaged 28.4 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists. He scored more than 35 points several times. Powell is a repeat selection to the All-Glendale basketball team and was also selected to the all-area football team.
Chad Reese, Hoover--Reese, a 6-3 senior, averaged 25 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Tornadoes. His best games came against Pacific League powers Muir, Pasadena and Crescenta Valley.
Eric Sanchez, La Canada--When Mandeville, who will attend Indiana in the fall, was lost for the season, Sanchez picked up the slack and helped the Spartans reach the semifinals in the Southern Section playoffs. He averaged 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Johnny Sanders, Franklin--Sanders, a 6-3 sophomore, was one of the outstanding players in the City. He averaged 20 points a game for the Panthers and led them to the quarterfinals of the playoffs.
David Sofro, Glendale--Sofro, a 6-1 senior, averaged 16.5 points, five rebounds and three assists for the Dynamiters, who were largely undermanned this season in a powerful Pacific League.
