Calcante, CSUN Sweep Away Southern Utah in Softball
Left fielder Beth Calcante went a combined five for six with two home runs and five runs batted in Saturday, leading the Cal State Northridge softball team to a doubleheader sweep of visiting Southern Utah.
In the two games, which Northridge won 9-0 and 10-0, the Matadors (32-3-1, 8-0 in the Western Athletic Conference) hit four home runs, raising their season total to 34. Northridge surpassed the NCAA Division I record Friday against Utah by hitting its 30th home run.
Calcante, who hit both of her home runs in the second game, has 11 this season and 24 in her career, tying her for sixth on the Division I list. She also tripled in the second game, giving her 11 total bases, equaling her personal best.
Northridge first baseman Tamara Ivie and third baseman Shannon Jones homered in the first game.
Jones went a combined four for seven with a double and three RBIs. In the first game, Scia Maumausolo went three for four and shortstop Vicky Rios went two for two.
Gennifer Turley, who had both hits for Southern Utah in the second game, was the Thunderbirds’ only player with more than one hit.
Kathy Blake (12-1) pitched a two-hitter in the first game, striking out six and walking none. Jennifer Richardson (6-0) stymied the Thunderbirds (6-23, 1-9) on two hits before the second game was called after six innings because of the 10-run rule.
